“Microscopic Monsters and the Victorian Cleanliness Campaigns”

“Microscopic Monsters” is an interactive map which brings together visual and textual depictions of the sanitary menaces that permeated the public imagination during nineteenth-century debates surrounding pollution and hygiene. Particular attention is given to the monstrous personification of disease, water, air, and sewers. This teaching-oriented archive was created using Omeka and Neatline, and is designed to encourage undergraduate exploration of original archival materials.
